Research & Advocacy
I’ve written extensively on history, identity, and political expression in the United States.
For PEN America, I’ve investigated:
how black and brown journalists are covering race, objectivity, and political extremism (in partnership with the Ida B. Wells Center for Investigative Reporting, featured in the Washington Post’s News Literacy Lessons and the Online News Association Annual Conference in 2023)
who free expression policy in California and Florida is impacting most — hint: teachers, social media users, rappers, and protesters (featured in The Los Angeles Times and The Miami Herald)
why the publishing industry is so white and how to fix it (featured in the Washington Post Book Club newsletter and BookRiot)
harm, appropriation, and when publishers and authors pull their books (featured in The Atlantic and Publishing Perspectives)
For the Current, I pulled back the curtain on immigration reporting and extremist information channels in the Trump era.
For Asylum Access, I examined how labor rights open up a pathway to self-determination for refugees in Greece, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
I also like talking to and working with artists. Most recently, I:
Dramaturged a new play about women, death, and book clubs for Boston’s Fresh Ink Theatre
Wrote the cover story for The Online Gallery’s 2023 Los Angeles issue, profiling interdisciplinary artist Sanford Biggers
I’ve also written a whole lot of sound bites and copy. My favorite is a plaque currently hanging in an Atlanta metro station.
